Jobs at Dennis

With 20 magazines to publish, there are lots of opportunities at Dennis. Here’s a brief introduction to the main types of roles that go into getting a magazine on the newsstand:

Editorial

From writing picture captions to 3,000-word articles, an editorial post is obviously key to the success of any magazine. But it’s about a lot more than simply writing. Involvement in planning the strategy and direction of the magazine, continually producing creative ideas, tailoring pieces to meet the style of the magazine, meeting deadlines and managing production processes and staff teams are all part of it.

Art & Design

The look of a magazine is as important as what’s written in it. Capturing the essence of an editorial piece, in line with the tone and strategy from the layout to images used, is an essential skill. The art and design posts ensure the evolution of a magazine’s look.

Advertising Sales

Of course, revenue is important. A magazine makes money not only from copy sales and subscriptions but from the advertising it carries alongside the editorial content. From selling small classified ads by phone to building and managing huge accounts with well-known brands through presentations and meetings, ad sales is not only about having the gift of the gab. We need people who are passionate, commercial and have a real ability to build and maintain relationships. And be motivated by the fact that they make a real difference to the success of our magazines.

Production

Effectively liaising with editorial staff, advertising agencies, reproduction houses and printers, and co-ordinating and checking all proofs means that a magazine is published to deadline without any errors. And that’s what it’s all about.

Circulation & Subscriptions

It’s all about knowing what sells a magazine. From the newsstand means making sure that our distributors place the right number of copies in the right retail outlets, building close relationships, understanding the sector, negotiating the best deals and being able to analyse information to get it right. From subscriptions it means targeting potential new customers, building the right deal and designing publicity material that’s tempting enough to turn sporadic buyers into long-term customers.

Central Services

HR, Finance, IT, Facilities and Marketing all work in partnership with the magazines, providing the support that enables strategies to be implemented and aims to be met as effectively and efficiently as possible. Without these support functions, we wouldn’t be able to publish our magazines!
